Something I missed was details of the sitemap, the WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin uses. It does not create a file called sitemap.xml it creates a file called sitemap_index.xml, see this post for full details http://yoast.com/xml-sitemap-in-the-wordpress-seo-plugin/
