Here are the seven reasons why I think you should be leaving blog comments

Consistently leaving high quality comments on other blogs is a great way to market and grow your own blog (and your personal brand). Here is my list of seven reasons why I think you should make commenting part of your blog development strategy:

1.) Link Building

As long as the blogger has not set nofollow tags on their comments, every little nugget you leave will be a link to your blog which will help with your SEO efforts.  The theory goes build as many links as possible from high quality sources and your SEO will improve.

2.) Attract Attention

If you are leaving comments on a bigger more established blog, there is a very good chance you will attract the attention of the blogger. Use this exposure to pitch guest post ideas, or gain attention by the blogger posting about one of your articles

3.) Disagree or Add to the Post

If you are able to disagree or add to a post, this will increase yoru profile as a subject matter expert. Adding quality comments arguing against or extending the origional post.

I would add one thing to this, and that is be nice, coming across as a troll when you attack someone you disagree with is weak and pathetic, bring someone round to your side of teh argument with quality analysis no name calling.

4) Extending the Converstation

leaving comments extends the converstation, it helps to build a community on yourfavourite blog, and if you are conversing a lot, your profile can onlyy increase.

5.) Give The  Blogger Some Support

When a blog is new, it feels like you are posting into a void, no-one is leaving comments or giving you feedback.  If you come across a new blog give them a little boost by leaving them a comment, tell them you like their work and give supprot on their posts.,  Be nice youre-karma can only increase.

6.) Increase your Profile

I have already touched on the fact that commenting can increase your profile, the mechanics of this depend upon your chosen blog to comment upon, selecting high profile blogs in your niche, and adding valuable content can increase your profile to the readers of that blog, who in turn may visit your own blog and hopefully become one of your readers.

7.) Make New Friends

Lastly, leaving a comment is just like saying hello in the real world, it can be the start of a beautiful new realtionship, say hello today instead of skulking in the background.

Wrap Up

Add copious comments, DO NOT just say “nice post” that is sooo lame,  and it is obvious to everyone reading the comments that you are link building, add value, be useful and have a converstation.

  1. Not really a reason. I figure if I’ve got time to read the whole post, then I’ve got time to leave a comment.

It takes time to write a good post. A little time spent in response is the least I can do.

It’s my own personal rule. I usually am able to follow it. And yes, I read your whole post.

    1. @Willis I agree I see too many people racing to the bottom of a post to claim with link with a poorly crafted and thought out comment. Some are barely in conext with the post.

    2. @Willis. I think you are right. I just read this post and so really I should comment on it. It’s only polite. I rarely get comments (from anyone besides my Mum) but it’s possibly because I’m a comment snob. I read but rarely comment. Well, that’s changing right now 😉 As WP Dude says, commenting is good karma – especially if you got good info out of a post that you may actually use yourself. Also good to see WP Dude’s writing style isn’t so “Rah Rah!” as so many of these Blogs can be. Not everything is all “fluffy and positive”. We need more light and shade in our BLOGs, otherwise, they effectively read like adverteese. Who needs more of that?

  2. I wouldn’t really agree about using comments to build links, at least not from an SEO perspective. The links in most blogs comments are nofollowed anyway.

I do agree that commenting helps to establish new relationships and to nurture existing ones. The one shot wonders never seem to get it though. They simply run from blog to blog posting the same meaningless drivel and never adding any real value.

    1. Thanks for your point Jeremy.

I used the term nofollow in my post and you used it here in the comments so I thought a little clarification is in order. when a link is marked nofollow, the search engine spiders will not follow that link and any SEO benefit which could be possibly gained will not be realised. In other words marking yoru comments nofollow makes people comment for commenting sake rather than a chance to harvest abnother backlink.

  3. Thanks so much for sharing this info. I never knew how intricate the process of blogging can be and how important it is to stay consistent and persistent. I’m learning quite a bit from you, keep up the great work!!

  4. Thanks again Dude, one question: How do I mark a comment no follow?
And just a note, I’m not really promoting my blog since I’m currently just using it to learn how. Still I must have left a decent comment somewhere on July 5th because my blog had 50 page views that day and I seldom have 20.
Your links are way more helpful than self-promoting, that’s why I follow you on Twitter when I refuse to follow so many others!!
Now go tickle those kids. . . the endorphins are good for both!!

  5. Hey WPD,

Overall great blog – thanks for the info. I especially like this post about leaving comments. I am somewhat shy and so often feel self-conscious leaving comments, esp since most bloggers know this is one of the most important ways to build links, so I think the blogger might suspect me of leaving a comment only for this reason — in otherwords, it seems sel-promoting. But thinking of it as good karma as you suggest is a far better way to view leaving comments – thanks for the this.

    1. Thanks for taking the first step to leave this comment, you are adding to the converstation with your point about being shy, does anyone else reading this feel self concious about leaving a comment? It’s not something I do, but sometimes I have felt I did not want to leave a comment because my knowledge may not be at a level to respond correctly.

Nice blog btw check out easyandtastyfood.com

  6. Thanks for the share. I have a random question? I am starting my own blog and want to know what is sharing to much information? lol and what is contributing? I want to get it right like your blog.

  7. I do all of the above and progress is slow, its’ a long game so try to enjoy it, thats what I would say. Make it your hobby not your obsession.

  8. Cool post! I have to say that I agree with 100% of these tips. I usually comment to give bloggers a boost if I see that they have empty articles.

For larger blogs, though, I admit that it’s all about the link building.

  9. I just came across your blog and wanted to drop you a note telling you how impressed I was with the information you have posted here. I also have a web site & blog about managing staff issues so I know I’m talking about when I say your site is top-notch! Keep up the great work, you are providing a great resource on the Internet here!

  10. I really thought your comments about why we should leave a comment was useful. This is a whole new way of marketing and its helpful to know what and why to take action.

You must type quickly as I see a lot of typos, doesn’t matter does it on a blog?.
